Why I Love Shopping My Home for Decor

Over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of shopping my home for decor, and honestly, it’s been one of the most rewarding decorating projects I’ve tackled in years.

It started innocently enough and like many of you, I enjoy watching decorating and thrifting videos on YouTube. I love seeing what treasures people find and how they style them in their homes. But after watching enough videos, I began noticing something funny.

I already owned many of the things that people were getting so excited about finding at thrift stores.

Things like vintage platters…old books, decorative trays, lamps and family heirlooms. Some were collections that had been tucked away in cabinets or stored in boxes for years.

Instead of heading to a store, I started looking around my own house. What I discovered surprised me. I had beautiful pieces hiding in plain sight, many of them with stories and memories attached that no new purchase could ever provide.

In a world where we’re constantly encouraged to buy more, there’s something refreshing about using what we already have.

And the best part? It doesn’t cost a dime.

Why Shopping My Home for Decor Works

When I was younger, decorating often meant buying something new.

These days, I see things differently.

Some of my favorite pieces aren’t new at all. They’re things I’ve owned for decades, inherited from family members, or picked up secondhand years ago.

The truth is that most homes already contain far more decorating potential than we realize. After a while, we become so accustomed to seeing the same items in the same places that we stop noticing them altogether.

That’s where shopping your home for decor comes in.

Instead of asking, “What should I buy?” start asking, “What do I already have?”

You might be amazed by the answer.

My Favorite Shop-My-House Discovery: The Vintage Platters

One of my recent decorating projects involved a collection of vintage platters.

Over the years, I picked them up here and there while thrifting. I tucked some away in cabinets, while others found homes throughout the house.

Individually, they were pretty. Together, they became a statement.

Instead of sitting unseen in cabinets, they now create a collected vintage look in my kitchen that I absolutely love.

The funny thing is that I didn’t buy a single thing to make it happen.

Everything was already here.

This experience reminded me that sometimes we’re sitting on exactly what we’re looking for.

We just haven’t put the pieces together yet.

The Crown That Finally Got Noticed

For years, I owned a decorative crown that wasn’t really doing much of anything. It hung in an area where it blended into the background and honestly went mostly unnoticed. But then one day, I decided to move it.

That’s it. No shopping…No spending…Just moving it.

Today it hangs above the television in my kitchen and has become one of my favorite features in the room.

Sometimes decorating isn’t about acquiring something new. Sometimes it’s simply about giving an old piece a better home.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Family Pieces

One of the things I love most about shopping my home for decor is rediscovering items that hold memories.

Take my old Jenny Lind high chair.

When my children started using that high chair nearly 40 years ago, it wasn’t considered vintage because it was simply a high chair.

But today, it represents a season of life that feels both distant and incredibly close at the same time.

So, instead of hiding it away, I’ve found ways to incorporate it into my decor.

Every time I see it, I’m reminded of family dinners, messy little hands & faces, and a house full of young children. No store-bought decoration can compete with that.

The Strawberry Canisters That Refuse to Go Out of Style

Forty-four years ago, I received a set of strawberry canisters as a wedding gift. At some point, decorating trends shifted and strawberry decor fell out of fashion. So…like many people, I put them away in a cabinet.

But recently, I pulled them back out. And you know what? I still love them!

Maybe they’re not the trendiest thing on social media. Maybe they won’t appear in a designer showhouse. But they’re part of my story.

That’s something decorating trends can never replace.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that our homes should reflect our lives, not someone else’s Instagram feed.

Shop the Holidays, Too

Shopping our homes for decor isn’t just for everyday decorating. In fact, It’s incredibly helpful during the holidays.

Recently, I pulled together some patriotic decorations using things I already owned. Flags…Stars…Baskets…Seasonal pieces collected over the years.

Instead of running out to buy new decorations, I gathered items from closets, cabinets, and storage bins.

When grouped together, they looked fresh and intentional.

It’s a good reminder that sometimes the answer isn’t buying more. It’s simply using what we already have more creatively.

Pull Those Treasures Out of Storage

I can’t tell you how many beautiful items I’ve discovered simply by opening a box.

Recently, I opened a box I hadn’t touched in years and rediscovered some very old vintage plates. Why were they in a box? Honestly, I don’t know. I had simply forgotten about them.

Now, they’re displayed on the wall (where the crown used to be) so I can enjoy them every day.

How many treasures do we already own that are sitting in storage because we haven’t looked at them in years?

The next time you’re tempted to buy something decorative, start there first.

Final Thoughts

The older I get, the less interested I am in chasing every decorating trend that comes along. Instead, I love homes that tell a story…homes filled with family memories, treasured collections, and pieces that have been gathered over time rather than purchased all at once.

That’s one of the reasons I love shopping my home for decor, because not only does it save money, but it also helps me appreciate things I already own. The vintage platters, the old Jenny Lind high chair, the strawberry canisters I received as a wedding gift so many years ago, and the vintage plates that spent years tucked away in boxes all have something in common: they mean something to me.

Before you buy something new to refresh a room, try shopping your home for decor first. After all, you may even discover that the most beautiful and meaningful decorating pieces were right there all along.
