The Best things to buy in january

Holiday decor

Have you been putting off buying a new Christmas tree? Were you scrounging for wrapping paper on Christmas Eve? Or…maybe you have minimal holiday decor.  January is THE time of year to buy for the next Christmas.  Garland, lights, ornaments, wrapping supplies and just about anything else for the holiday occasion can be found with deep discounts.  Retailers started putting Valentine’s Day items out on December 26th, so they’re anxious to move out the Christmas stock.

Linens/white sales

January has been the month for white sales for as long as I can remember.  If you’re looking to replace your towels or bed linens, this is the month to do it! Big department stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond, JC Penney, Kohl’s & even Amazon are great places to find the best deals.

winter clothing

For some of us, (i.e. in the South) Winter is just getting started. It’s the beginning of January and we just had our very first freeze of the season. But for many across the rest of the country, Winter has been around for a while.

To retailers, it doesn’t matter what the temps are outside. They have a calendar of seasons that they follow and by January, it’s time to begin moving out the sweaters, coats, scarves, gloves & boots.

If you’ve been putting off buying any of these items in hopes of warmer weather, now’s the time to some snag some deals, here! Even if you don’t need them now, stash them away for next season…especially if you have kids! You can always buy up a size or two.

tv’s

It’s a misconception that Black Friday is the best time to finds great deals on TV’s. January is actually the better month to score a great price on a TV.  Retailers are going to be enticing customers with awesome deals as Super Bowl Sunday approaches.

fitness gear/gym memberships

If you over indulged for the holidays or you’re looking to fulfill a new year’s resolution of being a healthier you, this is the perfect month to take advantage of great deals on home gyms, workout clothing and most fitness gear.

Working out at home can be every bit as effective as going to the gym and if you can score some great deals on the equipment, it’s a win-win all the way around!

Tip -I recommend shopping closer to the end of the month for fitness gear. Retailers may try and take advantage of New Year’s resolution shoppers at the beginning of January, but as we get closer to the end of the month, that’s when they may be looking to move out inventory.

If you’re not comfortable working out on your own, though, you may want to look into what specials your local gym may be offering.  January is a huge enrollment time for gyms and it’s also the time to grab some of the best specials as they’re trying to entice people to join.

furniture

New furniture is usually released bi-annually – in February and August. Therefore, many retailers will lower prices in January with the hope of clearing space for newer inventory that’s on the way.

rugs/flooring/carpet

Summer and fall are usually two of the busiest seasons for flooring sales. People tend to renovate more, this time of year. That means a lot of flooring sales during those months. January, on the other hand, tends to be a pretty slow month for renovations (and home sales). That means it can be a great time to find deals. You may even be able to negotiate on prices.  It certainly never hurts to ask.

calendars/planners

At the beginning of a new year, I love to sit down with my new calendar and begin writing my important dates in it…i.e. birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, etc. I love being organized. But, if you can wait a couple of weeks, many times, those calendars & planners will go on sale, as much as 50% off!

bikes

Typically, Fall is considered the best time of year to buy a bike, but with most of the country having significantly low temps in January, this may be a great time for bike purchases, as well.  Bike shops tend to want to clear out older inventory to make room for the new models.

weight watchers memberships

January is a great time to make the decision to lose weight and get into shape. For this month, Weight Watchers is offering 50% off a membership with nothing down. You may also find deals by googling “what deals is Weight Watchers offering”.

tax software

If you’re wanting to get a jump on tax season, now is a great time to go ahead and purchase your tax software for the current tax year. If you wait until right before taxes are due (or even 2-3 weeks, prior), most brands raise their prices just before the filing deadline of April 15th.

in season produce

Even though it’s still cold out, there are many different kinds of fruits & vegetables that are in season for January. Look for great sales on:  cauliflower, carrots, celery, kale, Brussel sprouts, spinach, turnips & parsnips. Also check out seasonal fruits, like apples, oranges, kiwis, lemons, pears, tangerines & grapefruit.

what not to buy in january

mattresses

You may see some mattress sales during the three-day MLK Day weekend. However, if you are patient, Presidents Day (in February), Memorial Day and the 4th of July are the best times for deals on mattresses.

major appliances

If you can wait to replace your fridge, washer or dryer, the best sales will be for President’s Day or Memorial Day.

jewelry

Valentine’s Day is just a few short weeks away and jewelry tends to be the #1 gift idea.  That’s why January is not the time to buy. In general, the best time to shop for fine jewelry at a discount is in late February — post-Valentine’s Day.

spring clothing

We all know that retailers are chomping at the bit putting out Spring apparel, even though it may be snowing outside. But the best time to find better deals would be waiting until closer to summer to do your Spring apparel shopping.

only buy if you’re already in the market…

I’m not saying to rush out and spend money on these things because they may be on sale, but if you’re in the market for some of these items or you know you may be needing them next season anyway, now is a good time to purchase them at a discounted price and save some money.
